Sorry About Your Wall

El pie de foto dice: A self-referencing work of graffiti apologizing for its own existence.

Sorry About Your Wall

The English Wikipedia entry for «self-referentiality» is illustrated by a photograph that has fascinated me for some months now, which I wake up thinking about some mornings and which serves as a metaphor for problems of art and thought.

It shows a freshly painted wall, spotless, on which someone, using spray paint, has written in large letters the phrase «Sorry about your wall». The caption reads: A self-referencing work of graffiti apologizing for its own existence.

It is indeed a sign of self-referentiality, though not a particularly obvious or revealing one. A phrase that simply said «I am a wall», «I am a graffiti» or «I am a phrase», for example, would also have served the purpose, and perhaps better, without accessory meanings that distract from the concept to be illustrated: the graffiti, although self-referential and despite what the caption says, does not speak directly about itself; in the case of «I am a sentence», the only element of the image is that sentence looking at itself, while the graffiti «Sorry about your wall» seems to require other elements, such as the wall, the owner of the wall, the author of the graffiti, as well as feelings of guilt – even if ironic -, cheekiness, and crime, and only through them it refers to itself. Self-referentiality is only one aspect of the many he raises, and for me, not the most important.

*

No paradox is evident in the image. On the contrary, one would say that it is a good example of coherence, a statement that completes itself, a grievance and its corresponding apology in the same stroke, leaving no loose ends.

If it is a paradox, its development lies in time, in its irreversibility, in an impossible retroactivation: in the fact that someone or something apologises for an action not yet committed and that it is precisely in apologising that the apology becomes necessary, contrary to what has become customary. This phenomenon is reminiscent of Marshall McLuhan’s joke in 1964 when he began a lecture by saying: «before I start talking I would like to say something», an impossible task because that very sentence – any sentence – prevents one from saying something before speaking.

Strictly speaking, however, one does not precede the other. The insolent nature of the painting makes us think of its author, who was already alive before the phrase, with all his baggage of intentions and intensities, and who was impelled to transgress the purity of this immaculate wall. He must have asked forgiveness in his mind for his bad thoughts, before started painting. Now, the caption on Wikipedia states that it is the graffiti itself that asks for forgiveness, and for the graffiti there is nothing prior to its own birth: if we consider the phrase in its purity, both its existence and its need to exist – the apology – have appeared at the same instant, its reason for being at the same time as the urgency to exist. If we disregard the existence of an author, there is no cause for this birth and everything in the image is a result: the grievance and the apology are born in exactly the same impulse and out of nothing, in an initial explosion, in an instant in which the hen is egg.

Trying to mentally go back to that initial moment brings to mind Zeno’s paradox, in which Achilles never catches up with the tortoise, with the difference that here grievance and apology are constantly stepping on each other’s toes. Also comes to mind that joke which, I have read, was Ludwig Wittgenstein’s favourite: a person with signs of tiredness says, panting, the numbers 2, 9, 5, 1, 1, 4, 1… 3. When asked what that means, he replies that he has just finished reciting the decimals of pi in reverse order. The beginning of his task must overlap with the beginning of his consciousness and his life, in infinity.

*

The image recalls many more things because it represents the primordial act, pure creation, and that serves as a metaphor for everything that appears. Language, for instance, which was necessarily born of a situation in which there was neither motive nor intention – there was no world – but which, at the very moment it came into existence, wove the web of purposes that we know as reality. Every idea, every work of art, every new conception of the world – the world itself – by looking at its beginning from within itself, renews this same paradoxical phenomenon. I suppose that this inaugural act is what the expression «passing from nothingness to being» refers to.

Things must arise by spontaneous generation as far as they themselves are concerned, without a process of appearance: one moment they are not and the next they are completely. They can then be understood as entities, as they could not have been conceived of from within themselves until they appeared. The act that marks their beginning, however, can only be thought of from the outside.

It can be argued that the sentence was not yet a request for forgiveness when the first drops of paint hit the wall when, even if the grievance could no longer be reversed, the content of the sentence could still have been modified: as in an Internet search engine, only when a few letters have been typed in the search field, it can be predicted that what follows will be an apology. But this is so from the external point of view of the reader, not of this sentence that realises itself in this act: the whole development of this sentence was implicit in the act of its appearance.

*

Every thinkable thing can only be thought if it is excluded from the continuum of the world, immersed in the totality, but separated from it. Separation creates the thing by defining it, by establishing an inside and an outside for it. If one wants to think about what existed before the inscription, one has to frame the graffiti, as an independent object, within a larger context – in this case, that of its author or that of Wikipedia readers. In that other open space, many other elements are superimposed, they refer to each other, and then one can imagine that they are linked, that their waves of energy extend in time and make history through the interlinking of successive generations of objects or people. But this necessarily happens only in this larger context, which is not the context of each entity. The appearance of this graffiti can only be thought of coherently from outside it. An external instance is necessary so that the meaning does not explode when it becomes so exactly and completely confined to the limits of the sentence, and so that the paradoxical force of the expression can be derived towards a point far from itself where it is extinguished.

*

Life is the extreme case of the self-contained, self-sufficient and independent, because there is nothing outside life, everything is seen from within it. Life is what makes all questions about life, and about anything else, possible, and the answers that can be elaborated about its origin and meaning – religious, scientific, magical – are deus ex machina. It is possible to think that something had to exist before life, in order for it to arise, but it is more accurate to say that it is necessary to imagine something prior to life in order to be able to think about it. Societies and individuals can conceive the beginning of the life of particular individuals, but not the beginning of life in its totality – societies cannot refer to themselves and that is why nationalism needs an external instance to contrast it, to mark its limits and to give it a reason to exist. Nor can each individual think about the beginning of his own life; to do so, he has to make an abstraction: a human being only knows what was before himself if he imagines his parents, and trusts what they or society tell him about the world before him. It is not a matter of trusting his parents or history, but of assuming his own perceptions and conceptions of what is past and future, which remain within the temporal and cognitive limits of his own life and among which are those he has of his parents, of the whole being of his parents from his point of view. Before the child is born, it is a set of illusions, of expectations for the future, of economic calculations, etc., -intentions, in short-. It is all this for the parents, because for the child, even though his birth is the most important event of his life, it is nothing. But when the child is born, it is already an individual, which makes up his entire world at every moment of his development.

Epicurus’ reflection that death is nothing is thus seen, in its inverted reflection, in the beginning of life. The funeral rites are equivalent to these illusions of procreation, in that one attempts to connect with the past as the other with the future, they seek to establish this connection between life and what only symbolically exists outside it, a relation of the dead to their past, of the living to their future and their past, which is only a projection of the living onto the living.

*

Life, the world, language, thought and consciousness are the same in this respect, because they are born at exactly the same moment. After the original sin, knowledge needs more knowledge, life more life, the world extends inexorably: the request for forgiveness stains the wall, and stains it even more if he repents and crosses out the letters, or if he paints over it, because everything that is done is an addition to the being of the graffiti and, by virtue of its irreversible temporal existence, the wall and life become a palimpsest. The logos grows, the intelligence that generates existence itself, and any new space of consciousness implies the appearance of a new reality: each individual, insofar as he or she has a specific level of consciousness, lives in a reality different from the others. Because of some coincidences, misconceptions and misunderstandings, a person believes that she shares a reality with others, or with the person she herself was in one of her earlier versions, but her reality is determined by her knowledge of herself and, through it, of her surroundings. Entities and contexts, the relationships between them, exist by a dynamic convention between the degrees of consciousness of individuals as they perceive each of the phenomena.

*

The members of each society precariously share a reality that is a composition of those conventions specific to the society in question and, in turn, the different societies meet and collide as a result of the various degrees of self-consciousness brought about by these compositions. For example, when the values of the Western world demand freedom for the Arab woman living under a strict regime of the Islamic religion, they introduce into her a self-awareness that implies a change in her life whereby she will, from that moment onwards, consider herself a victim of injustice. Those who want to get her out of her prison inoculate her with the poison at the same time as the antidote – the promise of the antidote, in fact: this woman was not a slave with respect to the reality in which she lived, with respect to herself; she did not even contemplate that possibility, nor did she wish to be liberated, nor did she resist it. It can be argued that, in her intimacy, in her unexpressed thought, she wanted to be liberated but she lacked that option: it had been vetoed and it was essential to make it available to her. But it is the very question of her condition that creates her consciousness of being a slave, that forces her to fight for her freedom, a freedom -a slavery- that was not hers at all until she became aware of it. As McLuhan wrote, the fish does not know that water exists until it is on the beach, and in fact, water does not exist for it – it did not exist. To get someone to understand a problem, in most cases, you have to create that problem for them, introduce them to a reality in which that problem exists.

It is knowledge that determines reality, as shown in this example from Ludwig Wittgenstein that I particularly like. It says: «a man will be a prisoner in a room with an unlocked door that opens inwards as long as he does not think of pulling instead of pushing» . From that man’s point of view, the door is to all intents and purposes locked, as long as he does not have the means to open it. Looking at this reality from the outside, one might think that the door was open, and that the man was operating it incorrectly, and yet the door is open only in the sense that any closed door is potentially open, in the absence of the instruction manual, as in this case, but also of the appropriate key or the charge of explosives to open it de facto.

Once, in a conversation with Wittgenstein, a university professor said to him: ‘With all the horrible aspects of our civilisation, I am sure that I would still prefer to live as we do now than as the cavemen lived. Of course, said Wittgenstein, but would the caveman prefer it?’ It would be interesting to find out his opinion without having to ask him the question, without having to make him understand the question, and without taking him out of his caveman reality. For it would only be necessary to introduce him into a contemporary self-consciousness – to make him feel his body odour, the limitedness of his life, etc. – for him to see these benefits of civilisation as desirable, while at the same time being condemned to them. Once released from his prison, ‘the bed of moss is no longer a delight to his heart, he moans sleeplessly and the sting frightens him, the warmth of the light and the coolness of the night are useless’. Never will have he again the option to return to his cave-home.

As with technical or social progress, or with freedom, commercial economic relations can only be conceived of in one direction and cannot be circumvented once they exist – in any case, compensated for; the awareness of exploitation is irrevocable, and makes exploitation real. So, too, certain advances in science that are presented as a gift are also an imposition, and this is evident when new medical techniques are made available to a patient that can prevent imminent death – whatever the quid pro quo.

On the other hand, the Arab woman who has fallen into the realm of Western thinking is now free – or wants to be free – according to Western standards of freedom. But it must be borne in mind that Western standards can be a form of slavery seen from a more self-conscious perspective. It can be said that no one is free, because every day new forms of exploitation of which we are victims become conscious and which only come to be contemplated as such once they have been introduced into the mind: even the most free individuals are subjected, even if they do not know it until someone or something comes along and inoculates them with the awareness of this injustice in which they begin to live the moment they start to know about it. Closed doors appear where before there were only walls because only walls were visible, doors that now need to be opened.

*

At each moment one is born again, in each new knowledge one acquires of oneself, because one enters into a new reality and also, therefore, dies at each change, and the past reality becomes inaccessible.

Art acts from each stage of reality with the purpose of bringing back the practitioner to an earlier moment, which is always that of the instant in which the world first appeared. Artistic practice involves the scrutiny of all aspects of the artist’s life that contribute to the impression that this life is continuous with respect to those of other individuals: illusions that the individual artist existed before in some form and will exist afterwards. When the artist succeeds in cancelling his connections to the world and disengaging himself from social conventions and historical meaning, by thinking for himself and in totality every object that constitutes his work at every moment – and any object, if thought in itself, embodies totality – he evokes that initial nuclear explosion of meaning.

I sometimes represent art by using this metaphor: the moment of artistic experience is that of the air in movement that is just in front of the path of a recently fired projectile that is opening up the world: the bullet moves at great speed and pushes the air in front of it, sets it in motion, but only pushes it and shakes it for a millisecond until it passes through it. Art has ceased to exist there, in that place that is now already the world, and has moved a little further on, to another air that is now being pushed, and in that displacement, art is always different and is always the same. Art is that space, fleeting but permanent, that lies between absolute stillness and the point of the bullet. After the bullet, meaning has already exploded and the world exists and is full of turbulence, of language.

The image of the wall with the phrase «Sorry about your wall» could well be an emblem of art, because it implies its entire operation and meaning, the impossible need to conceive the thought of the very origin of thought, the elusive changing space in front of the bullet. Because art, in contemplating that situation in which it was still nothing, that impossible instant of thinking and existing, is also recovering the instant of death, in which one is no longer nothing, which also cannot be thought and which, for that reason, is always equal to everything that cannot be thought, equal to itself. Artistic practice provides an experience when it succeeds in contemplating this immaculate wall again, for an instant, before the work of art inevitably soils it afterwards, with the urgency that imprints horror vacui, here in the strictest sense. The fate of the work can then be none other than to ask forgiveness for the transgression, for the sin of causing that exit from unconsciousness and uncertainty and for the fixation of that idea, and the formula it uses to achieve redemption has to be as innovative as that which constitutes the transgression. And language, since its birth, does nothing more than try to atone for that guilt, to destroy itself by means of its highest expression, poetry.

After birth, the only occupation of human beings, conscious and unconscious, active and passive, is to find meaning in their lives, or to try to hide the need for meaning. I have recently perceived this clearly on several occasions, as my relationship with the world has changed after the death of my parents, when their illusions have been definitively shattered and mine sense their end. As soon as one becomes conscious, one does nothing but ask for forgiveness for being in the world, for «man’s greatest crime is to have been born».

One True Art

10th Anniversary

Ten years ago, on 28 September 2013, the central event of my project One True Art took place in the Nouvel auditorium of the Museo Reina Sofía. It is probably the most important thing I have ever done in my life, partly because the process of preparing for it has had a significant impact on my knowledge of art and its role in society – it has changed me profoundly as an artist and as a human being.

The event consisted of a sequence of sixteen interviews, each lasting thirty minutes, with artists, curators, critics, philosophers and poets, who answered many questions with the aim of answering the main one: «What is art?

I spent two years working to prepare every detail:

After reaching the agreement with the museum, first of all, I looked for four collaborators to help me in the whole process. Over the course of several meetings, we decided among the five of us which aspects should be dealt with in order to define art. According to the chosen themes we started to think about guests. Hundreds of names were brought to the meeting table, read about, their merits and points of view discussed. Of those considered appropriate, many did not accept due to disagreement with the project, others could not attend due to previous commitments, others could not be contacted, or were discarded by the museum’s management. After several months of work, we closed the list of participants with sixteen names that made up a balanced group.

The next step was to decide the order of their interventions, to favour the aim of the project: the meaning of art to be revealed – or, at least, not hidden. The questions were elaborated after reading as much as possible, either written by or about the participants; we then ordered them in such a way that each participant’s first question continued what we expected the previous participant to answer to his or her last question. A fortnight beforehand we did a dress rehearsal, in which each of the questions was read in succession and we speculated on what the answers would be, taking into account what we knew about the interviewee’s thinking and writing.

The design of the stage, of the lights, of the timing, was also specifically planned to facilitate concentration, to eliminate as much as possible all the distractions usual in conferences, interviews, round tables, etc. -The most direct approach to the subject matter, no introductions, no acknowledgements, the interviewers with their backs to the audience, the times scrupulously timed; Greek theatre, television set, collective performance, religious and technological ritual.

Finally, on 28 September, from 10 a.m. to 8.25 p.m., everything that had been envisioned was put into practice. The morning began with abstract ideas of aesthetics, which are found in books and academic institutions and, by an uninterrupted debate, ended on the art that is most relevant to the problems of our times, after having considered the relationship between art and poetry, the unconscious, the market, the institutional…

The event was moving for many of those who attended, first of all for the interviewees who, in some cases, remarked how exceptional it was to answer questions from someone who understood the essence of their thinking and writing. A few of the members of the public also communicated their enthusiasm to me in their comments. I was not able to enjoy them or the event itself very much that day. I was nervous, physically and mentally exhausted, I had been dragging months of insomnia; above all, I was confused by everything I had discovered about art, the world and myself: those two years I spent in a pressure cooker crumbled all my doubts and my certainties. And three years later, when I had digested so much emotion, I wrote Art and the Rest.

The interviewees were:

Pierre Alferi, Jesús Mª Carrillo, Thierry de Duve, Adelita Husni-Bey, Alana Jelinek, David Maclagan, Renzo Martens, Chus Martínez, Asier Mendizabal, Christoph Menke, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, John Roberts, Dieter Roelstraete, Kerstin Stakemeier, Marcus Steinweg, and Oxana Timofeeva.

Collaborators and interviewers were Steven Cuzner, Julia Moritz, Fatos Ustek, and Tom Vandeputte.

To a large extent, the project was made possible by the generous will of Teresa Velázquez and the dedicated work of Natasha Goffman on behalf of the museum.

Juande Jarillo prepared the lighting and oversaw the recordings.

More information, including the recordings of the interviews, is at One True Art. They’re many ideas in it and most of those we’ve interviewed are very knowledgeable and interesting personalities.

One True art.

Pierre Alferi, Jesús Mª Carrillo, Thierry de Duve, Adelita Husni-Bey, Alana Jelinek, David Maclagan, Renzo Martens, Chus Martínez, Asier Mendizabal, Christoph Menke, Lili Reynaud-Dewar, John Roberts, Dieter Roelstraete, Kerstin Stakemeier, Marcus Steinweg, y Oxana Timofeeva.

Entusiasmo

English below

Y has debido tener menos éxitos nominales[1].

The Enthusiasm

I don’t think there can be anything more precious for an artist, and ultimately for any human being, than enthusiasm. Only with a large dose of enthusiasm can an artistic project be undertaken, since any of them must necessarily seem ridiculous at first to all those who hear about it and, even more so, to the author, who is so intrigued and driven by this uncomfortable feeling as to carry the project out. It is thanks to the enthusiasm injected into artistic projects that they manage to emerge from the well in which they are born and acquire a force of their own with which they drag everything else along with them. Enthusiasm is the energy applied to matter during the artistic experience, which provokes a nuclear reaction and finally releases an amount of energy far greater than that which was contributed.

You still need more enthusiasm for living than for art, given how ridiculous life is when you look at it intensely enough: in that respect, of course, if self-deception doesn’t work for you, you need a good dose of enthusiasm.

I suspected the importance of enthusiasm, because it has been present in every pleasant and glorious moment and on every occasion I have successfully accomplished a work, but always camouflaged among other factors, emotions and circumstances. That is why its pre-eminent role was only clearly revealed the day I stumbled upon the following phrase: «Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm». It is attributed to both Churchill and Lincoln, which makes one suspect falsely in both cases: to come up with a phrase as brilliant as this you must have endured far more failures in life than the two of them combined. And you must have had fewer nominal successes[1] .

I wouldn’t have thought of it either, but I identify exactly with the idea because I am fully aware of having failed many times and have a perfect sense of absolute triumph in everything I have set out to do, at least so far. The enthusiast always succeeds, according to this criterion, and I have seen it for myself. When I read this sentence – and even more so now, when enthusiasm sometimes wanes – I see clearly that this is what has enabled me to pass without a dent from one work to another, from one mistake to another, from one self to the next without lowering my head.

A word of caution is in order: the meaning of this phrase is completely alien to the self-help manual interpretation that a large part of the Western or Westernised population would attribute to it promptly. In no way does it mean that he who tries ceaselessly, who maintains his enthusiasm, will in the end achieve whatever he sets his mind to, that success. In fact, it is the opposite of that statement: through the mechanical repetition of peaks and valleys of effort and reward, with bridges built across them by enthusiasm, one discovers that the goal is not the projects or the successes, but purely the enthusiasm. It is not the fertiliser, but the harvest. Something that helps to understand this fact is the experience of a few one-off successes sprinkled through the biography, with which it is demonstrated each time that not only is partial success unsatisfactory, but it even leaves a bad taste in the mouth, in that it creates expectations and bad habits and, ultimately, worst of all, claims part of that enthusiasm for its own ends.

The specific thing about enthusiasm is its momentum: that conjunction of elements whereby, whatever one knows or believes, one feels deeply that all the projects in one’s mind have a higher meaning, that there is a perfect way to bring them to fruition, and that pushing them there will produce great joy in oneself and in others. Success consists in moving from that state to that state every time you do something, that is, every time you fail. This failure is necessary for this other success.

Because of what I have just written, I find the statement, so widespread among young cultural agents, that «enthusiasm is a form of self-exploitation» to be nonsensical. I was once told of a museum director who used this slogan to encourage his employees to fight for fair financial compensation for their work, rather than give in to bad offers to perform tasks for which they were overly motivated.

Then I have read this argument in many places and it is, in most cases, about people who articulate their intellectual life around a simple narrative: life has treated them badly, their innocent enthusiasm can be exploited by capital, and the only thing that this relationship produces is precariousness.

I find two essential objections to this proposition:

First, it is easy for capitalists to use enthusiasm as a lever for exploitation when the desire of the exploited is in tune with the interests of capital. That is, you have to be careful what it is that you are enthusiastic about, not so much because it allows you to be exploited, but because you may have been pre-enthusiasted about what it was most profitable for capital to exploit in the first place. You disown exploitation when you should already disown your enthusiasm. A cultural worker is characterised more by what comes with the word «worker» than by the modifier «cultural». That is to say, the enthusiasm of the truly critical is very difficult to exploit and no institution wants it. So, probably, if capitalism uses your enthusiasm, it’s because your enthusiasm is a product of capitalism. Creating, thinking, making art is essentially about counteracting the desires of capital in oneself. If you write about how we are going to die, or about the need to destroy democracy, or about the essential evil of human beings, then you won’t find anyone who wants to exploit you. For that, capital does not want any enthusiasm, it does not make use of people’s enthusiasm, but tries to choke it, extinguish it as a wild fire. This enthusiasm cannot be sold on the cheap because nobody wants to buy it.

Secondly, there is something inconsistent, or paradoxical, in attacking capital with such a strategy: in defending oneself against capitalism by the surprisingly capitalist method of trading everything you have, i.e. of firmly demanding a better market price for your capital of enthusiasm, which you want to invest well and make produce. The repeated slogan that «the powers that be do not want citizens to think so that they do not realise they are being exploited», present in the most relevant pamphlets on the subject, is completely false: the powers that be – if they exist as such, as defined entities – want citizens to think, as long as what they think is that they are being exploited and nothing else. The powers that be want citizens to crave for getting out of exploitation, and exploiting others, or creating mechanisms where society continues to function even better, without exploitation. The powers that be want, above all, to make them aware of their enthusiasm as something computable, convertible into money, negotiable. That this desire – this enthusiasm – which in a world free of the pressures of capitalism is given away for free, should enter into the structure of regulated exchanges. Those who claim the value of their enthusiasm are helping to make it tradable on the labour market. «Exploitation» and «profitability» are two words that mean practically the same thing, even if it seems that exploitation is imposed by others and profitability is decided by oneself in a sovereign way.

The working classes, in effect, now have too much time to think, but not enough. What the powers that be do not want is for citizens to reach the level of knowledge necessary to think that everything that happens is inevitable and that, whatever work they do and whatever money they have, they are going to die. That’s not what the powers that be don’t want.

These two objections merge into one: when you get individuals to want to assert their enthusiasm in economic terms, what you get, in the longer term, is that they acquire and develop enthusiasm for aspects of their existence that they can assert in the market and, ultimately, only for those that have a prior value independent of their interest in them («value» in terms of the interests of capital), that they subordinate their enthusiasm and their interest to the profitability of their objects.

In any case, there are many people who cannot afford to be enthusiastic, who cannot sell their enthusiasm, neither cheaply nor expensively, because they have never been able to do the things that excite them, because there is no one to pay for them and they do not have the resources to do them on their own initiative. And also, there are many who do not have the presence of mind, the self-confidence, to accept being exploited. Those who self-exploit because of their enthusiasm are already privileged, if judged on a broader scale than the petty-bourgeois one on which those statements are issued.

But I have to return to the specificity of enthusiasm. The word «passion» is semantically related to enthusiasm. Passion and enthusiasm differ in that the former comes from oneself, while the latter is something that invades you. That enthusiasm possesses us is something that is in its etymology, because enthous comes from the Greek and means «carrying a god within». In Ancient Greece, they believed that the gods could possess humans and fill them with a divine energy. I don’t know about that, but it is clear to me that enthusiasm possesses me and fills me with energy. Moreover, passion has an external object, whereas enthusiasm operates in a vacuum. It cannot be provoked or invoked, but you can open wide the doors to it and make sure that it will not be rejected on its arrival.

Enthusiasm is also in the same semantic family as optimism, but they are not by far the same thing. Optimism implies a belief, not always justified, that things will turn out well. In that sense, optimism is almost synonymous with hope. The enthusiast, on the other hand, does not believe but feels that, regardless of the outcome, the adventure is in any case worth undertaking. Neither with regard to beliefs nor arguments, but as far as enthusiasm is concerned, Baron Munchausen’s system of extracting himself out of the swamp by pulling his own pigtail is perfectly legitimate.

The cynical adage that «an optimist is just someone ill-informed» does not apply to the possessor of enthusiasm. No matter how well informed you are, no matter how clear your perspective is that what you are attempting is difficult, and in no one’s interest; for someone with the right enthusiasm, that makes the project even more attractive. If the enthusiast has anything to do with the optimist, it should be in the terms Stanley Kubrick defined himself: «I am a practical optimist, but a theoretical pessimist». I identified with that phrase for many years until I was able to define myself more accurately as an «enthusiastic pessimist». I could take this idea further by attributing to enthusiasm the character of the resister, the one who has failed but is impelled to fight on, who must fight on because he must remember – above all, that he has failed. In line with this idea, it should be pointed out: it is very different to be a person with a capacity for enthusiasm – perhaps sad or melancholic – than to be an enthusiast, a character closer to optimism.

At this point in my life, if I had to give good advice to a young artist, it would be: «Learn to control your enthusiasm, to increase it and to dose it, so that it lasts longer and with more intensity». I have never felt so qualified to give advice, I have never found advice so useful. I have had a lot of enthusiasm in my life, but perhaps I could have had more if I had been aware of its importance. That would have allowed me to live now on rents, at least on the days when I fly lower.

Ensuring a steady flow of enthusiasm requires discipline, and to anyone who believes that control stifles such an emotion, I might reply as Max Jacob replied to a young poet: «Perhaps you say that I make you lose your lightness, your impetus, your enthusiasm. Not at all. I teach it lightness, impetus, enthusiasm, for the more he is compressed at its source, the higher the stream of water rises afterwards».

As the years go by and one grows older, it becomes more difficult to keep one’s spirits up. Diminished strength, the disappearance of friends – for that reason or another -, one’s own obsolescence in the face of new generations – which goes hand in hand with the fact that no one cares about your musings in the slightest – as well as other pleasures of ageing, all contribute to the fact that enthusiasm is in short supply, that one has to lament how one took it for granted when it was plentiful and squandered it. In my surroundings, one factor that has contributed to the shortage has been the pandemic, because it has transformed people, and not exactly towards a more courageous attitude, and more generous in terms of their energy and ideas. I don’t think it has affected me specially, given that the basis on which my work has been based, since my youth, contains a high proportion of the question «what’s the point?». I notice the contrast well because my spirit (even more so now, after several bereavements) finds only reluctance in potential collaborators, in institutions, in different people with whom I used to share illusions and projects. Not even capitalism has succeeded here, because one often does not manage to enthuse people no matter how much one pays them.

Gods or devils, the important thing is to be possessed, if we heed this beautiful definition by Thomas Mann: ‘A veritably gladding, ravishing, undoubtful, and believing inspiration, an inspiration for which there can be no choosing, no bettering, no mending, in which everything is received as blessed decree, which trips up and tumbles, ruffling sublime shudders from pate to tiptoe over him whom it visits and causing him to burst into streaming tears of happiness - that comes not from God, who leaves to reason all too much to do, but is possible solely with the Devil, the true Lord of Enthusiasm.’

20 years, 25hrs

On a 3rd May like today, twenty years ago, 25hrs, a 25-hour screening of video art, took place in a sports centre in downtown Barcelona. During the first hour, the five hundred visitors who attended could watch Dziga Vertov’s «The Man with the Movie Camera». More than 330 works by 300 artists from around the world followed. For the curators, Jorge Bravo, Luisa Ortínez and myself, it was a life-changing event. Juande Jarillo, Juan Carlos Escudero, Chloe Lambourne, Marko Daniel, Carolina Grau Rahola, Anxo Nimo Rabuñal, Jesús Arpal, Julia Ribera and many other friends and participants helped us.

And, of course, all the artists who showed their videos: A Constructed World (Jacqueline Riva & Geoff Lowe), Abbey Williams, Agnes Lam, Akio Okamoto, Akram Zaatari, Alan Curral, Alicia Martín & Mario Marquerie, Alison Murray, Alnoor Dewshi, Ane Lan, Angus Wyatt, Animal Charme, Anja Wiese, Anke Schäfer, Ann Steuernagel, Anne Course & Paul Clark, Anne McGuire, Anson Mak, Antoni Abad, Antony Flackett, , Arjen de Leeuw, Atsushi Ogata, Axel Stockburger, Ayako Yoshimura, Bart Dijkman, Bas van Koolwijk, Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay, Bjorn Melhus, Brian Boyce, Bridget Murphy, Campanilla, Carles Congost, Carlo N. Una señora ha publicado unas imágenes en la red de lo que ella llama “una performance”, que muestran cómo entra en la feria de Madrid con un cartel amarrado al cuello en el que, con torpes caracteres, ha escrito “I am an artist. I need a gallerist”.

A mí me entristece.

“I am an artist.

To Respect or Not to Respect

In Japan people still wear masks. Many Japanese wore masks before the pandemic – and the Spanish writer Blasco Ibáñez mocks the Japanese of the beginning of the XXth century in his La vuelta al mundo de un escritor (The World Tour of a Writer) for «increasing the ugliness of the Japanese» with this «poultice». Nowadays the mask is worn by everyone, indoors and outdoors, in the street, and even in the countryside, in the mountains. Few faces with oriental features are seen uncovered. But not so of Westerners, and I am somewhat repulsed to come across them, to observe foreigners abusing a rule that the locals scrupulously follow. It is a comparative lack of respect, as if contempt for the docility of their hosts were written on their uncovered faces, as if they were smarter, better looking. I would also like to take off my mask, which is very uncomfortable with my glasses, and with so many changes of temperature in places and transport, but modesty prevents me from doing so, a shame I have that, if it were not known and accepted willingly, would be painful. Many of the norms in Japan are followed by the Japanese because of the enormous peer pressure that pervades all activities, which greatly increases the difficulties of being different. I am probably also a victim to some extent of the effect of this pressure when I wear the mask.

A few days ago I visited Ise Shrine near Nara. The buildings of the two temples, the spaces surrounding them and the manicured parks and forests in which they are located are exquisite, lush and luxurious, a pleasure for most visitors, religious or not. For me, the visit gave me some displeasure, especially when I witnessed a lady approaching a Shinto priest and requesting a rite of which I can know no more than what I saw: the woman held out an envelope to the priest and took off her coat, which she left resting on a bench; the priest threw a pinch of something that looked like salt on either side of the woman; the two went around the fence of the temple’s central courtyard, inaccessible to visitors like me, and entered the grounds; The priest then gave way to the lady who stepped forward and, with great reverence and recollection, clapped her hands twice; they then retraced their steps. I found the behaviour as haphazard and pretentious as I experience that of Catholic priests, with little effort of estrangement, on the few occasions when I have to attend a mass, generally for rather sad reasons. All temples are the product of the fear of death, and the more precious and cared for they are, the more they convey to me the sensation of successive generations of individuals, often enslaved, trying to avoid their anguish by diverting resources towards the construction and improvement of these facilities. It is not that I have an ideological stance on this, but simply that this idea grips me throughout the visit, preventing any other feeling, any partial enjoyment. I observed the Shinto ritual that day from the same, unavoidable, point of view.

For all this, I had to do myself a particular violence when, on leaving the temple grounds and passing under the torii, the wooden arch at the entrance, instead of turning around and, facing the temple, bowing twice like all the Japanese people with me, I continued resolutely forward. Surely no one minded my defiance, and only I suffered and enjoyed it.

Respetar o no

A few days

I’m in the last days of «Commuting Time». I only have four shots left, two in Barcelona and two in Santiago. During the month of November, so far, I have travelled some 24,500 kilometres by train (four times the distance between Barcelona and New York, I can read online). I will have spent some 330 hours on the train. In a first impression, the practical result is close to what I expected, the video we are recording, which will be shown in full on 1 December at the opening at the ethall gallery in Barcelona, at 20.00 and at the Trinta gallery in Santiago de Compostela on 7 December. The result of the artistic experience also seems satisfactory, although I still don’t know how it has affected me until I’m more rested and have some distance. It’s strange, of course.
On ethall’s website we posted a few days ago the shot of the 16th with the explanation of the project. It’s also on Trinta’s instagram.
