Nostalgia

Nostalgia

It’s weird to think now how good things were just five years ago, maybe a bit more, before the pandemic. Back then, all we had to worry about was saving the planet, the destruction of the oceans, forest fires, the little nature we were going to leave to future generations, if there were any, and we could devote all our time to thinking about the end of life on Earth and the quasi-omnipresence of capitalism in our experience of the world. What a noble cause it was that occupied the media, driven by young people and answered from their privileged platforms by the most recalcitrant adults. All that has now been forgotten. Now we no longer have time to think about lofty things, to suffer over something whose solution is so difficult and distant.
Now we have to think about immediate and unsolvable problems that depend purely on the evil of those who run them and those who encourage them: death in Gaza – from hunger! those dying in Ukraine, the latest blunder made or uttered by the dictator, the shamelessness of the bellicose and exterminating leader’s statements, the possibility that an individual – democratically elected, let us remember – somewhere between an imbecile and a psychopath, will press a button to see what happens, like a child who wants to see what is inside a toy, and shatter the lives of millions of people.
It is important to think about this to realise how good we are, and how we will talk about these injustices with nostalgia in five years’ time, if we get that far.
